PokerStars Announces Americas Cup of Poker

by LTDPipkin 28. July 2009 11:43

In what will be a battle for international bragging rights PokerStars has announced its 2009 Americas Cup of Poker. This inaugural Americas Cup of Poker (ACP) will bring together teams from 16 different nations to battle toward the live final, to be held at the Cerro Catedral Ski Resort in Argentina’s Patagonia region.

Up for grabs is $250,000 in prize money, with $100,000 to be split among the winning team’s players. Daily freerolls and online qualifiers priced as low as $0.20 assure that every PokerStars player has the chance to take part. These qualifiers have just begun at PokerStars.

The 16 teams who will participate in the ACP are split into four groups, consisting of 13 American continents nations and three “wild card” entries, comprised of players from the rest of the world. The four groups are as follows:

  • Group A: USA, Mexico, Ecuador, Wildcard 1
  • Group B: Canada, Columbia, Uruguay, Wildcard 2
  • Group C: Chile, Venezuela, Peru, Costa Rica
  • Group D: Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Wildcard 3

Over the next three weeks, each group’s teams will compete in a series of head-to-head, round-robin matchups. The top eight teams overall – the two teams with the best records from each group – will move on to the live final in Argentina. Each team in Argentina will be comprised of the top five players from each nation, based on points earned during the qualifiers, and each team in the final will also be joined by a live member of Team PokerStars Pros. Qualifying points are earned by placing in the top 100 during any of the ongoing first round’s qualifying events.

Solving debt problems with debt management

by LTDPipkin 28. July 2009 08:59

There are many ways to solve debt problems from budgeting to seeking professional debt advice. Here we go through some of the options that can alleviate debts and make debt management easier for you.

What is debt management?

In a literal sense it means “the management of your debts”, but debt management involves simplifying your finances and making debts more affordable for you. This could be anything from budgeting correctly to prioritising debt payments, or using an increasingly popular solution – the Debt Management Plan (DMP).

Who can a debt management plan help?

DMPs are for people who are struggling to repay their consumer debts (such as overdrafts, personal loans, store cards and credit card debts), or for people who are continually going further in to debt each month. A DMP enables all of your unsecured debts to be gathered into one monthly payment – which makes finances simpler. Repayments are then rescheduled over a longer period of time to make them more affordable.

The single payment that is made each month is paid to your debt help provider, who then distributes this on your behalf to creditors on a pro-rata basis, minus any costs. This means that the more of your debt that the creditor is owed, the more they will receive of your payment.

Because a DMP is a non-legal agreement, there are no legal fees to pay and you do not have to put your property up as security. The other advantage of a DMP is that they are incredibly flexible and can be altered should your financial situation change. This means that if you find your income dropping, the monthly payment can be reduced accordingly. Likewise, if your income increases your monthly payment can reflect this – so you could end up repaying debts quicker. The flexibility of a DMP also means that if you no longer have debt problems you can stop using it altogether – so you can use the DMP to suit your circumstances. In short, you are put back in control of your finances.

How does a DMP work?

The most important thing when considering a DMP is that you first seek impartial debt advice to determine whether one is suitable for your situation. If you decide to go ahead, your expert adviser will go over you finances with you to fully understand the level of debt that you are in. From there they may be able to offer you some initial budgeting and debt advice that could alleviate your problems. They may also be able to advise you on whether you are spending too much money or if there are ways to boost your disposable income – as you may not be receiving all of the benefits or tax credits that you are entitled to.

After this assessment, your adviser will be able to work out your disposable income (how much money you have at the end of every month to pay off your outstanding balances). This is done by working out your total expenditure for each month including priority payments – like rent/mortgage, travel, food and utility bills – then subtracting it from your total monthly income. The remainder is called your “disposable income” and is how much you have to pay off unsecured debts. This will be distributed to your creditors by your adviser; all you have to do is make a single monthly payment. They will also try and have interest and charges reduced or frozen.

There are other professional debt solutions available, depending on how much debt a person has and their level of disposable income available to pay towards repaying debts. One such solution is an IVA. It is similar to a DMP because your unsecured balances are put together and paid off in one single monthly payment, but it is different in that it is paid off over a fixed period of time (usually over 5 years). Once the IVA term is complete all of your remaining unsecured debts are written off. A Trust Deed is similar but is only for those people living in Scotland. Trust Deeds are generally repaid over a three year period.

With all of these solutions, creditors should stop sending demand letters and calling at inconvenient times to chase debts, as all contact will be done via your debt help provider.

Before deciding on the appropriate debt solution for you it is essential that you seek impartial debt and IVA advice from a reputable provider, such as Chiltern, The Debt People or Hamilton Locke. This is so the solution you decide upon is the best one for you and helps you to get out of debt in the shortest time possible.

2009 WSOP Main Event November Nine Features Phil Ivey

by LTDPipkin 17. July 2009 01:48

We have experienced the frills of the World Series of Poker 2009, with 56 events and a punishing 13 days of play in the Amazon Room at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, the final table of the 2009 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event was been decided.

At the start of Day 8 we had a total of 27 players back to the Amazon Room at Noon on Wednesday with dreams of being at the final table of the most prestigious poker tournament in the world. Everyone remaining would receive a minimum of $352,832, but the true aim was on making the November Nine final table. Leading the pack was poker newbie Darvin Moon, a logger from Maryland, who held slightly over 20,160,000 chips as play began.

Leo Margets is the last female standing, who came to the start of play as one of the shorter stacks in the room, she was the first to depart in 27th place. She was shortly followed by notable players including Antonio Esfandiari (24th place for his largest WSOP cash ever) and Day Six leader Warren Zackey, who dropped from the tournament in 22nd place after his pocket deuces were out-floped by Ian Tavelli’s [Qs] [Js]

Tavelli’s aggressive play eventually caught up with him, the 21-year old was eliminated in 17th place ($500,557). Almost immediately after Tavelli’s departure, one of France’s top professional players, Ludovic Lacay, was defeated by Jeff Shulman in 16th place.

As the field continued to dwindle, both Darvin Moon and Steve Begleiter used their large stacks to climb to astronomical levels at the tables. Moon never seemed to be in any trouble during play on Wednesday and Begleiter, continued his march up the leaderboard. For all of their work, however, most of the eyes in the Amazon Room where following Top poker professional Phil Ivey.

Ivey has had one of his best World Series of Poker's ever with his skills at their highest level for some years. He has captured two bracelets during the six weeks of the WSOP tournament and had been at or around the top of the Main Event leaderboard since Day 1 started. Starting the day with over 11 million in chips, Ivey seemed happy to sit back and manage his stack, being aware of the 2 hour blind levels and plenty of chips in front of him. I am sure he is scouting potential opponents should they reach the November Nine final table.

After over 11 hours of battle, the final table of the Main Event was determined. The unlucky Bubble Boy was pro player Jordan Smith, who fell in tenth place ($896,730) at the hands of our November Nine Chip Leader Darvin Moon, his Pocket Ace's losing to pocket 8's with a [8c] [4d] [2d] flop.

World Series of Poker 2009 - November Nine

These are the nine players who will gather at the Rio in November to determine the next WSOP Main Event Champion:

  • Darvin Moon (Oakland, Maryland) – 58,930,000
  • Eric Buchman (Valley Stream, New York) – 34,800,000
  • Steve Begleiter (Chappaqua, New York) – 29,885,000
  • Jeff Shulman (Las Vegas, Nevada) – 19,580,000
  • Joe Cada (Shelby Township, Michigan) – 13,215,000
  • Kevin Schaffel (Coral Springs, Florida) – 12,390,000
  • Phil Ivey (Las Vegas, Nevada) – 9,765,000
  • Antione Saout (Paris, France) – 9,500,000
  • James Ankenhead (London, England) – 6,800,000

With our some of the top poker professional players including Ivey, Shulman (Editor of CardPlayer Magazine), and Ankenhead in the mix, some are reporting that this will be one of the strongest Main Event final tables of the past few years.

Play will pause on the Las Vegas leg of this year’s WSOP, however focus is now turn to Europe in London, with four events to go. The 2009 WSOP Europe, beginning in September, will offer a chance for the survivors of the Main Event to tune up their games. The November Nine then will emerge from their respite. All are now dollar millionaires, but the eventual winner will take the $8.5 million first place prize.

Thang Luu Wins WSOP Event 3 $1,500 Omaha Hi-Low 8-or-better

by LTDPipkin 3. June 2009 03:07

World Series of Poker WSOP Event 3 $1,500 Omaha Hi Low 8-or-better

It's been another year of records so far at the 2009 WSOP and only fitting that Event 3 $1,500 Omaha 8-or-Better, concluded with another history-making performance. Last year's defending champion, Thang Luu, eclipsed a record-breaking field of 918 entrants to capture his second World Seris of Poker bracelet! Not only is this Luu's second bracelet, it's his second in the same event in consectutive years.

Back in 2007, Luu took second place in this same event for $147,726. Last year, Luu topped that performance with a win in the same event for $243,342 in what was the largest Omaha tournament ever played. This year, Luu came out on top of a larger field than last year and earned himself $263,135. In total, Thang's earned over $650,000 for all three of those finishes!

Ming Reslock Eliminated in 3rd ($106,373)

In Round 27 the Blinds are 30000/60000, on a flop of [3h] [4h] [Kc], Reslock check calls Luu. The turn is the [6h] and Reslock check-raises all in she turns over [9c] [8s] [7c] [8h] with a gutsho straight draw. Luu shows [6h] [7d] [3s] [Tc] for two pair with a blank on the river. Ming Reslock earns $106,373 and a 3rd place finish

Thang Luu 2,300,000 and Ed Smith 1,800,000 are very closely stacked at the start of heads-up play.

Ed Smith Eliminated in 2nd ($162,110)

Ed Smith limps in from the button, he only has a little over one small bet left. Thang Luu tries to get Smith all in with a raise. Smith simply calls with only a few thousand chips behind.

The flop came down [Qd] [5s] [4h] and Luu bets to force Smith all in and he makes the call. Luu is holding [Qc] [9d] [8c] [7d] against Smith's [Jc] [9h] [9c] [3h]. The turn is the [5h] and the river the [Td] and that is the end of this historic event. Ed Smith is this year's runner up and earns $162,110.

Thang Luu wins back-to-back Bracklets in the same event

Winning 2 consectutive events in the WSOP equalled Johnny Chan performance back in the 1980s. Luu was the chip leader at the end of Day 1. He was never really the big stack at the final table, but commanded the action and picked his spots wisely. When play got down to three handed, Luu simply took over and began crushing the competition. From there, it was smooth sailing. Congratulations to Thang Luu for his win and amazing back-to-back performances.

We have the seating for the final table.

Seat 3 - Pascal Leyo

History of the World Series of Poker

by LTDPipkin 25. May 2009 11:48

History of the World Series of Poker

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) is "the oldest, largest, most prestigious, and most media-hyped poker tournament in the world". It is held annually in Las Vegas, NV. The first WSOP occurred in 1970 it was an invitational event, Benny Binion invited six of the best known poker players to The Horseshoe Casino. In the beginning, the WSOP grew slowly. It took twelve years before the event drew 52 participants in 1982. In the early 1980s satellite tournaments were introduced allowing people to win their way into the various events for less than the full entry fees. By 1987, there were over 2,100 entrants into the tournament. The highest number of poker players was in 2006, with 8,773 people participating in the Main Event alone with the winner Jamie Gold taking home a first prize of $12,067,292.

The first World Series of Poker was not a freeze out tournament, but an event with a Set time limit, the winner was determined by secret ballot. In 1973, a second event, five-card stud was added. Over the years most of the major poker variants have been played at one time or another. Since 2007, the WSOP has consisted of 55 events. While events traditionally take place over one or more consecutive days during the series throughout June and July, in 2008 the Main Event final table was delayed for the first time until November. The winner of each WSOP event wins a World Series of Poker bracelet and a monetary prize based on the number of entrants and buy-in amounts. A World Series of Poker bracelet is considered the most coveted prize a poker player can win, with one from the Main Event revered above all others. Since 1976, a bracelet has been awarded to the winner of every event at the annual WSOP. WSOP victories prior to 1976 are also known as "bracelets". Most of the major poker variants are featured, though in recent years over half of the events have been variants of Texas hold 'em.

The World Series culminates with the $10,000 no-limit texas hold'em "Main Event", which since 2004 has attracted entrants numbering in the thousands. The victor receives a multi-million dollar prize. The winner of the World Series of Poker Main Event is considered to be the World Champion of Poker. Since its inception, Stu Ungar is the only player to have won the Main Event three times. Johnny Moss also holds three Main Event titles, however the first win was not played in the current tournament format but by a vote making Ungar the only three-time champion in terms of actual victories. Moss (if the first time win by vote is counted), Ungar, Doyle Brunson, and Johnny Chan are the only people who have won the Main Event for two consecutive years. Johnny Chan's second victory in 1988 was featured on the 1998 film Rounders. Phil Hellmuth holds multiple WSOP records: most bracelets (11), WSOP cashes (68) and most WSOP final tables (41).

The current Main Event bracelet winner, Peter Eastgate is the youngest person to win the Main Event. Since 2005, the WSOP has been sponsored by Harrah's Entertainment.

Swedish Player Sven Ragnar Astrom Wins WPT Venice, powered by bwin

397 poker players competed for more than $2 million in prize money at the first-ever World Poker Tour® tournament in Italy

Last week, 397 players participated in the first ever World Poker Tour event in Italy — WPT Venice, powered by bwin. The €4,000 tournament kicked off May 6 at Casino di Venezia, with a diverse international playing field, including poker pros Carlos Mortensen, Vanessa Rousso, Chad Brown, Surinder Sunar, Steve Sung, Patrick Bruel, Max "the Italian Pirate" Pescatori and WPT Season VII Player of the Year, Betrand “Elky” Grospellier.

After five days of play, 22-year old Ragnar Astrom took home more than $542,000, a $25,000 seat in the WPT World Championship in Las Vegas, and an official WPT bracelet on Sunday when he defeated fellow Swede, Martin Jacobson. Jacobson received $325,000 as runner-up, and Frenchman Vincent Pasdeloup placed third to win $217,000, having reached the final table after qualifying for WPT Venice as a freeroll qualifier on bwin.

"This was our first event with World Poker Tour, and we are delighted with how well things worked out,” said Manfred Bodner, Co-CEO of bwin. “The combination of the online and offline player experience coupled with the information systems and being able to offer bets on the tournament adds a whole new dimension to both sides."

"We are thrilled that our first event in Italy was a success and well-received by the players,” said Steve Lipscomb, WPT CEO and Founder. “We are pleased with the high player and pro turnout and also with the unique elements that bwin brought to the table for this event. We hope to continue this level of success as we expand further into Italy, the rest of Europe and into other continents."

In addition to holding the event in the oldest casino in the world, bwin developed and introduced a Live Tournament Information System, which provided real-time streaming information such as leaderboards and bust-out updates throughout the tournament. bwin also created "Tournament Achievements," which awarded players who reached certain milestones, such as certain chip levels, first player to knock out an opponent, and the “Bubble Buster” award.

The May 10 final table was videostreamed live, and bets on the final table were offered on www.bwin.com, including overall winner bets, country bets and headto-head bets.
